Virtual Costume Contest

We are physically distant, but virtually together this year. We’re still going to do costuming, but we’re going to have to be a little unconventional this year.

Hallway Costumes are generally costumes worn just for fun while attending the convention. They vary in scope and craftsmanship. They can be anything from  re-creations taking hundreds of hours to construct or costumes bought “off the rack”. They can be finely finished or simply a rough build enough to convey the idea. There is no right or wrong. All are welcome.

Your mission is to make our judges go “cool”, “wow’, or “laugh” (with you).

Some of our favourites will be shared on our website and through our social media channels.

Children and youth may self promote to more senior categories

General rules and regulations

All contestants 13 years of age and under must have their parent or guardian’s permission to enter, and must be accompanied by them in their picture (in or out of costume).

Category winners, and some of our favourites will be re-shared by Keycon on its various Social Media channels.

To enter, follow these simple steps.

  1. Take a picture of yourself in costume holding a sign that says Keycon 2020
  2. Post your picture on one of our main social media channels (Instagram, Facebook Group, Twitter, or Discord) with your
    1. category
    2. the hashtags #Keycon, #VirtualKeycon, and #HallCostume
      E.g.,

      ADULT #Keycon #VirtualKeycon  #HallCostume

Note: on Facebook Group, Twitter, or Discord look for the “HallCostume” threads to post in.

Multiple entries are allowed per person over the course of the weekend. Solo, pairs, groups, lets see them all!

Contest starts 5pm on Friday May 15, 2020 and closes at 2pm on Sunday May 17, 2020. You are welcome to post more pictures one the channels and the hashtags mentioned above, but they will not be considered for judging.

By posting to the above mentioned threads and/or using the above mentioned hashtags, you are giving Keycon permission to re-share them to our social media channels, and re-publish them on our website.

All participants must exhibit good sportsmanship and remain professional at all times. Rude behavior and offensive remarks or insults (online or in person) toward staff, judges, or other contestants may be considered grounds for disqualification from current and future contests.

No nudity, obscene gore, sexuality or cultural insensitivity will be allowed at this event. This is a family friendly event and follows the movie rating of PG.

Be safe while taking your photo. You’re taking the photo in your own space, but we want you to be safe and whole when we meet in person again next year.

There will be no craftsmanship or skit judging as part of this contest.

The Masquerade Director reserves the right to disqualify anyone from competition for any other reason. This may be based on but not limited to taste, danger to the onlookers or other contestants, or other inappropriate behaviour.

All judge’s decisions are final. They reserve the right to withhold any and all awards if they deem no entrants deserve them.

FAQ

Q) Can my friend post a picture for me with their instagram, etc.?

A) Yes, just make sure they include your category and the appropriate hashtags.

Q) What if I don’t have instagram and don’t have any friends with instagram?

A) E-mail extravaganzas2020@keycon.org, and we’ll share it through our instagram for you.

Q) Can I really wear a store bought costume? Is that fair?

A) Yes, this one is about the fun of being in costume. Assemble it from other costumes, the second hand store, dye the wool by hand, by any means legal and moral. However, give us a great pose. Show us how that costume or character speaks to you.

Q) Can my Hallway Costume be something I’ve worn elsewhere or entered in another competition?

A) Yes. To paraphrase Harrison Ford, “Hey kid, it’s not that kind of [competition].”
