We've been doing this for 28 years now, so the question naturally arises... why? Why put in the immense amount of time and effort it takes to put on a science fiction convention?
The short answer is: We're all a little nuts.
The long answer is: Because we love the intelligence of fans, their creativity and playfulness, and the intricacies of fannish culture. We love providing a place where fans from many different walks of life can gather for two and a half wonderful days to celebrate their interests, their goals, and their dreams. We love seeing people show off their costumes; we love the late-night filking; we love the incredible discussions that arise in the con suites (terraforming Mars... how to get your novel published... the influence of the early Earth atmosphere on modern rocket technology... how do you make those horns stick to your forehead like that?); we love the glow on a fan's face when they get the chance to meet their favorite author, artist or actor.
The purpose of Keycon is to have fun, to make friends, and to learn new things. If we accomplish that, then our purpose has been fulfilled.
